Herbs think piece Part6 Passionflower

In this article we will look at the passionflower, an herb with beautiful geometric patterns.

Passion Flower Characteristics
Passiforia

This herb is characterised by its beautiful appearance, with stamens like clock hands on the petals.

The main ingredient is an alkaloid. The main constituent is an alkaloid, a type of drug such as cocaine or morphine.

Passionflower, however, is an exception to this rule, as its mild action makes it a safe herb for both children and the elderly.

For this reason it is also known as the “plant tranquiliser”.

Even though it is mild in action, it is an alkaloid, so if you are a tranquiliser or hypertensive, consult your doctor or herbalist beforehand.

Passionflower uses

Health

It is said that it has a function to normalise the workings of the sympathetic nervous system.

It also soothes the nerves and relieves pain, and is therefore useful for neuralgia and muscular pain.

It is mainly the flowers that have medicinal properties and this tea will calm the nerves. It doesn’t have much of a taste, so try blending it with your favourite herbs.

It prefers sandy soil with good drainage and a sunny position.
